MTC Namibia

MTC Namibia, also known as Mobile Telecommunications Limited, is a publicly owned company headquartered in Namibia. Established in 1995 as a joint venture involving Namibia Post and Telecommunications Holdings (NPTH), Telia, and Swedfund, NPTH acquired full ownership in May 2004. In 2006, 34% of MTC shares were sold to Portugal Telecom for N$1.34 billion, with the Namibian government retaining the remaining stake through NPTH. With an estimated 430 employees, the company specializes in providing mobile telecommunications services, covering 98% of Namibia's population of nearly 2 million citizens. Its infrastructure includes over 650 base stations and repeaters, extending cellular coverage to all major towns and arterial roads. MTC operates a dual band 900/1800MHZ network and was the second mobile operator to introduce 4GLTE in May 2012. Its 3G HSDPA+ Network supports download speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps in major Namibian towns. The company manages two mobile switching centres (MSCs) in Windhoek and Oshakati, which collectively accommodate over 2 million active users. Additionally, MTC operates Namibia's sole full-service customer contact centre, addressing service queries across telephony, SMS, fax, GPRS, data, voicemail, and 3G/HSDPA for both pre- and postpaid subscribers.
