National Federation of State High School Associations, a privately owned organization headquartered in the US, was founded in 1920 and employs approximately 200 individuals. The organization offers education-based interscholastic sports and activities, functioning to provide education administration programs.
On January 29, 2026, the Alabama High School Athletic Association Central Board of Control voted to separate its private member schools into two competitive divisions for championships, making Alabama one of eight out of 51 state high school athletic associations under the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) that hold separate postseason tournaments for public and private schools. Previously, on January 22, 2026, the NFHS selected Andy Frushour, a senior assistant director for the Michigan High School Athletic Association, as one of eight high school association leaders to receive a Citation at its summer annual meeting. This follows a July 9, 2025 update to NFHS high school softball rules, specifically Rule 1-8-6, which prohibits players from transmitting or recording audio or video from the playing surface to ensure game safety and integrity. Earlier, in late June 2025, the NFHS announced that high school baseball would require a double first base, split between fair and foul territory, effective 2027, primarily for player safety.
