This followed news from January 29, 2026, that the Alabama High School Athletic Association Central Board of Control voted to separate its member private schools into two divisions for championships, making Alabama one of eight high school athletic associations nationwide to hold separate postseason tournaments for public and private schools. On January 22, the NFHS also announced its selection of Andy Frushour, a senior assistant director for the Michigan High School Athletic Association, as one of eight high school association leaders to receive a Citation during its annual meeting.
