NewSpace India, also known as NSIL, is a wholly-owned Government of India company under the Department of Space, headquartered in India. Established in 2019, with approximately 10 employees, the company primarily offers enterprise connectivity services. Functioning as the commercial arm of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), NSIL undertakes commercial launches of satellites, provides space-based services, and promotes space-related industries within India, also involving itself in the development and launch of small satellites, space exploration missions, and other related activities.
India's private space industry faces a steep climb to global competitiveness due to being the most expensive among six markets capable of satellite rocket launches, according to an August 21, 2026 peer-reviewed article. This follows the August 18 National Space Technology Conclave-2026, where Vinod Kumar, director of promotion directorate IN-SPACe, stated that the June 2020 opening of the space sector to private participation has fueled a boom, with over 450 space start-ups now operating in India. Earlier, on August 17, the maiden launch of the first Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) assembled under an industry-led production program was pushed to March 2027. This program aims to transfer end-to-end PSLV production to a private-sector consortium. Meanwhile, an official factsheet on August 14 projected India's space economy, currently valued at $9 billion, to reach $40-45 billion over the next decade, noting a rise in registered space start-ups from one in 2014 to approximately 440 by August 2026 due to growing launch capabilities attracting global demand.
