Eutelsat OneWeb, a privately owned company founded in 2012 and headquartered in the UK, offers enterprise connectivity services via low Earth orbit (LEO) broadband satellite internet. Employing approximately 550 people, it operates as a subsidiary of Eutelsat Group. The company maintains offices in Virginia, USA, and a joint venture satellite manufacturing facility, Airbus OneWeb Satellites, in Florida with Airbus Defence and Space. Its legal name is Network Access Associates Ltd.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in India extended the trial spectrum usage period for satellite internet providers, including OneWeb and Jio Satellite, by six months until November 2024. This extension provides additional time to meet India's security requirements. Bharti became a major investor in OneWeb in 2020, following its emergence from bankruptcy, and Eutelsat acquired a 24% stake in OneWeb in April 2021. The DoT's decision is considered a critical development for satellite communication in India, potentially expanding broadband services in underserved areas.
