Northwestern University, a privately owned institution founded in 1851, provides higher education. Employing approximately 15,390 people, it operates primarily in the United States with two main campuses: a 240-acre campus in Evanston, Illinois, near Chicago, and a 25-acre campus in downtown Chicago. An additional campus was established in Doha, Qatar in 2008.

Additionally, scientists at Northwestern University are developing a lifestyle medicine program using wearable sensors to monitor eating habits. Judy Franks, a Clinical Professor in the Integrated Marketing Communications program at the Medill School, joined the university's faculty in 2008.
