Northwestern University is a privately owned higher education institution headquartered in Illinois, US. Founded in 1851, the university employs approximately 15,390 individuals. Functioning as an American higher education provider, it operates two campuses located on Lake Michigan: a 240-acre campus in Evanston, minutes north of Chicago, and a 25-acre campus in downtown Chicago. A third campus was established in Doha, Qatar in 2008.
On August 27, 2026, the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law urged the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate Northwestern University's $737 million contract with the Qatar Foundation, which the center alleges violates the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA). Earlier, on August 25, 2026, Northwestern University and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies led a preclinical study, published in Nature Neuroscience, which found that loneliness can reprogram the brain to escalate alcohol consumption in males while suppressing it in females.
