On April 4, 2026, Luke Johnson’s The Light cinema chain expressed its intent to acquire Showcase’s UK venues, a £55 million movie-house business that Paramount put up for sale. Previously on April 3, Michael O’Leary, head of the theater lobbyist organization Cinema United, sent letters to state attorneys general urging them to oppose Paramount, nine days before Paramount executives were scheduled to meet at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. This follows Cinema United's Friday request to state attorneys general William Tong and Marty Jackley to scrutinize and potentially block the proposed $110 billion merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery. Earlier on April 3, Paramount canceled "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy," the final Star Trek series in production, after a recent revelation indicated fewer than 40,000 people watched the show, pointing to low ratings.
