Pearl TV, a non-profit organization headquartered in the US, was founded in 2014. The organization functions as a coalition of U.S. broadcast companies focused on transitioning to NEXTGEN TV. Its members include Cox Media Group, The E. W. Scripps Company, Graham Media Group, Gray Television Inc., Hearst Television Inc., Nexstar Media Group, Inc., Sinclair Broadcast Group, and TEGNA Inc.
Backers of NextGen TV aim to advance the standard by addressing two core problems: a lack of consumer awareness and the absence of affordable ways for households to experience its video, audio, and interactivity features on sets without integrated tuners, according to an April 24 report. This effort follows the launch of the NEXTGEN TV Converter Box Program by America's broadcasters. On April 23, the program, designed to offer low-cost upgrade options, opened to consumer electronics manufacturers, targeting an estimated market of over 20 million U.S. households that use antennas for local channels. Earlier, on April 16 at NAB 2026, America's broadcasters initially announced this new initiative, which aims to provide millions of viewers with an accessible path to upgrade their television viewing to NEXTGEN TV.
