Rutgers University Athletics, also known as Rutgers Scarlet Knights, a non-profit organization headquartered in the United States, was founded in 1864, functions as a tier 1 media tech buyer, and generates revenue through sports tickets, merchandise, and sponsorship. The entity operates as the athletic teams representing Rutgers University's New Brunswick campus. Known for hosting the first ever intercollegiate football game on November 6, 1869, which established it as the "Birthplace of College Football," it fields 24 teams in the Big Ten Conference, participating in Division I competition as sanctioned by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). These teams compete in sports such as baseball, basketball, cross country, field hockey, football, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, swimming and diving, wrestling, and volleyball. The athletic programs compete under the name "Scarlet Knights," derived from the Rutgers University mascot chosen in 1955.
