Schibsted, a publicly owned company headquartered in Norway, was founded in 1839 and employs approximately 6,240 individuals. It primarily focuses on technology, information, and media, operating various media brands including VGTV in Norway.
Norway's data protection authority, Datatilsynet, on May 1, 2026, raised serious concerns regarding Schibsted's new practice, which requires readers to pay an additional 39 Norwegian kroner monthly if they do not want their personal data used for personalized advertising. Previously, on April 26, Schibsted acquired premium TV sports rights, securing a deal to broadcast the entire Norwegian Cup football tournament for both women and men, alongside matches involving youth national teams, in the next rights period. This move follows the company's acquisition of Telia’s TV and media business last year, which included Sweden’s TV4 Group and Finland’s MTV. Earlier in April, Schibsted's Podme platform demonstrated success in attracting young, paying audiences, establishing itself as one of Norway’s fastest-growing digital subscription products. Kristin Ward Heimdal, managing editor and editor-in-chief of the podcast and audiobook subscription service, explained the company's strategy for engaging this demographic.
