Showmax is a privately owned company headquartered in South Africa. It is a subsidiary of Multichoice and NBCUniversal and operates as a tier 2 media tech buyer. Founded in 2015, Showmax employs approximately 130 individuals and reported $6.5M in revenue as of 2023. The company specializes in media and TV services, functioning as an internet TV service in South Africa.
Showmax officially shut down its app on April 30, 2026, concluding its run after years of championing African originals and leaving a significant legacy in Nigeria's creative industry, according to a report on May 10, 2026. MultiChoice, the platform's owner, ended the service that day, which it had once positioned as the South African pay-TV giant’s answer to Netflix. Leading up to the shutdown, MultiChoice consolidated its streaming services in East Africa, offering eligible Showmax subscribers in Uganda free trial access to DStv Stream Compact until the end of May 2026. This move followed DStv's earlier announcement on April 2, 2026, regarding trial access for eligible subscribers, with MultiChoice initially revealing the plan to discontinue Showmax in early March 2026.
