On August 19, the Swedish online gambling trade body BOS, through CEO Gustaf Hoffstedt, called for a rethink of the Swedish gambling sector and its regulation, ahead of his attendance at the SBC Summit in September. This followed Svenska Spel's rejection of claims on July 24 that it downgraded its responsible gambling focus, dismissing allegations of reduced commitments in its corporate framework. Previously, on July 23, the state-owned gambling and lottery firm rebutted "profits before protection" claims, insisting consumer protections remain at the core of its duties. This response was directed to Swedish daily Aftonbladet, which on July 19 questioned whether Svenska Spel had become increasingly focused on profits following the company's reported record income betting results attributed to the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Earlier, on July 16, Svenska Spel reported record second-quarter results, its strongest since Sweden's 2019 re-regulation, with net gaming revenue increasing 7% year-on-year to SEK1.96 billion ($202 million) and operating profit rising 13% to SEK617 million ($64 million), both boosted by stronger customer engagement during the World Cup.
