The Recording Academy advanced Kenya's bid to host its Africa headquarters on September 12, 2026, after senior officials from the organization, responsible for the Grammy Awards, held talks with Kenyan President William Ruto and other stakeholders in Nairobi. This followed a week of meetings with Kenyan artists, government officials, and industry stakeholders as part of a creative economy collaboration with the United States Embassy, during which officials also announced plans for Kenyan mentee artists to travel to the United States next month. Previously, on August 18, The Recording Academy's CEO, Harvey Mason Jr., revealed the organization was in active discussions about the controversial Asian Pop category. This reconsideration came after BTS decided to boycott the 2027 awards. On August 15, Mason Jr. stated that it had become clear some artists felt the Asian Pop sector did not adequately represent their music, signaling a potential trim of the category about 15 days after BTS declared its boycott.
