The Recording Academy is in active discussions about the controversial Asian Pop category, a development following K-pop group BTS’ decision to boycott the 2027 Grammy Awards. Previously, on August 15, CEO Harvey Mason Jr. indicated the organization might trim the problematic "best Asian pop music performance" category, acknowledging that "some artists feel that the sector does not represent the music they have made difficult." This follows reports on August 14 that the Academy was engaging with members of the Asian pop community regarding the new category, which was one of five new categories announced on June 16. The controversy escalated after BTS announced on July 29 that they would not enter their recordings for the Grammys as a protest against the new category. Separately, on August 11, singer-songwriter Busisiwe Thwala, known as Cici, joined the Class of 2026, receiving voting rights with the Recording Academy.
