Universal Television Alternative Studio UK, also known as Monkey Kingdom and UTASUK, is a privately owned British television production company headquartered in the UK, specifically in London, with active production offices in Manchester and Los Angeles. Founded in 2001 by media executives David Granger and Will Macdonald, the company employs approximately 90 individuals and reported $13.9M in revenue as of 2024. Operating as a subsidiary under Universal International Studios, it provides media managed services and functions as a tier 2 media tech buyer. Historically, the company operated under the corporate brand Monkey Kingdom, which was formally retired in May 2025 upon the firm's structural integration into NBCUniversal’s American unscripted department. The company focuses on the UK unscripted broadcasting landscape, known for its development of high-volume reality television, lifestyle formats, and celebrity-led sketch comedies. Its content library includes series such as Made in Chelsea and its various international spin-offs, The Real Housewives of Cheshire, The Real Housewives of Jersey, Celebrity Karaoke Club, The Emily Atack Show, and TFI Friday.
Monkey Kingdom, a production company, has had a series of successes recently. In May, the company announced the birth of 10 baby macaques in the Guangdong Neilingding Futian National Nature Reserve, boosting the wild macaque population on Neilingding Island. In November, Channel 4 will broadcast a dedicated night of comedy programming to mark 10 years of fundraising for its Stand Up to Cancer campaign. Monkey Kingdom has also appointed Roma Khanna as its new head of studio, leading divisions such as Carnival Films, Matchbox Pictures, and Working Title Television. Additionally, the company's focus on wildlife and ancient treasures has attracted a new generation of travelers to the Aggressor Safari Lodges in Sri Lanka. Monkey Kingdom's achievements have also extended to the world of NFTs, with one of its NFTs selling for a remarkable 660 Solana (equivalent to US$148,000) in June.
