The University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) is a state-owned public land-grant research university located in Lincoln, Nebraska. Established in 1869 by the Nebraska Legislature under the Morrill Act, it served as the sole University of Nebraska until 1968, when it became part of the larger University of Nebraska system following the absorption of the Municipal University of Omaha. UNL is Nebraska's oldest university and its flagship institution within the state system. The university's governance is overseen by a Board of Regents, whose members are elected to six-year terms. It currently employs approximately 10,240 people.
