University of South Alabama, a State Owned institution based in US, founded in 1963 and employing approximately 2730 individuals, functions as a global research and teaching university that provides students education in business, the liberal arts, education, engineering, computing, the sciences and healthcare.
The University of South Alabama appointed Dr. Daniel W. McCarthy as its director of athletics on July 21, 2026. McCarthy had served as interim athletic director since June 1, following the retirement of Dr. Joel Erdmann, and previously as deputy athletics director since 2017, where he helped advance strategic initiatives and enhance the student-athlete experience. Earlier, on July 9, the university implemented a family engagement strategy across the student lifecycle through CampusESP, aiming to provide a clear and consistent communication path for families, addressing previous inconsistencies where different offices communicated separately. This followed an announcement in late June that the University of South Alabama partnered with weather technology company Climavision. The collaboration provides USA with access to Climavision's proprietary radar data and AI-driven forecasting technology for instruction and research in atmospheric science, including X-band radar networks designed to close weather observation gaps and improve forecast accuracy.
