The World Boxing Council (WBC) recently threatened to strip Noel Mikaelian of his cruiserweight title after Zuffa Boxing announced a fight against Jai Opetaia on September 12 in Las Vegas, conflicting with a prior agreement made by promoter Sampson Lewkowicz for Mikaelian to defend his title against David Benavidez in December in Glendale, Arizona. On August 5, William “El Camarón” Zepeda secured the WBC Lightweight World Championship, defeating former world champion Lamont Roach at the Virgin Hotel in Las Vegas. Previously, on July 1, the WBC announced a collaboration with NAS Medical to enhance boxer health, safety, welfare, and medical governance, aiming to maintain high standards of medical care and athlete protection. This followed the WBC's reaffirmation of its Clean Boxing Program (CBP) guidelines on June 22, an initiative launched in 2016 and extended to the women’s division in 2019, which prioritizes athlete safety and seeks to eradicate prohibited substance use.
