World Mountain and Trail Running Championships, also known as WMTRC, is a non-profit organization headquartered in Austria. Founded in 2022, the organization employs approximately 20 individuals. It operates as the global pinnacle for off-road athletics, established through a biennial partnership between the World Mountain Running Association (WMRA), the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU), and the International Trail Running Association (ITRA, sanctioned by World Athletics. The unified championship provides a competitive framework that tests elite athletes across five distinct disciplines: the Vertical Uphill, Classic Up and Down, Junior Classic, and the Short (40km) and Long (80km) trail races. Each edition is hosted within technically demanding mountain massifs, such as the upcoming Canfranc-Pirineos in 2025 and the first African hosting in Cape Town in 2027, utilizing high-altitude terrain to award official world titles that command international media equity and commercial sponsorship.
