The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) is a privately owned, non-profit organization headquartered in the United States. Founded in 1927, it serves as a professional organization for the motion picture industry. AMPAS's primary activities center on film production and it is best known for hosting the annual Academy Awards ceremony. The organization employs approximately 450 people.
In June, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invited 534 new members, increasing total membership to 11,104. Thirty-three percent of the membership identifies as women, and 24 percent are from underrepresented communities. On August 6, 2025, the Academy announced the transfer of governance of the Academy Color Encoding System (ACES) to the Academy Software Foundation (ASWF). This transfer concludes a period of over a decade where the Academy solely managed ACES. Prior to SIGGRAPH, the Academy announced the next phase of ACES development, with expanded community support through the ASWF. ACES, a global color management standard, will now be managed within the ASWF, an organization for open-source software developers in the motion picture and broader industries.
