The African Union (AU) is a continental union consisting of 55 member states located on the continent of Africa. It was established on May 25, 1963, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and is headquartered in the same city. The AU's main objectives are to promote unity and solidarity among African countries, defend their sovereignty and territorial integrity, accelerate the socio-economic development of the continent, and promote international cooperation. The organization has a staff of approximately 2,170 employees and an annual budget of around $500 million (as of 2022).
