Block Communications Inc., also known as Blade Communications, is a privately owned tier 1 media tech buyer headquartered in Toledo, Ohio, US. Founded in 1900, the company employs approximately 3000 individuals. Functioning as a holding company, it manages various assets, primarily in the print and broadcast media sectors, including its main product offering of broadcast television and radio.
Block Communications agreed to sell the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette to the nonprofit Venetoulis Institute for Local Journalism on April 14, 2026. The transaction prevents the 240-year-old newspaper's planned shutdown, which resulted from a protracted legal dispute between Block Communications and the paper’s union over restoring workers’ healthcare benefits. The deal, expected to take effect on May 4, also sees the Venetoulis Institute, which publishes the Baltimore Banner, assume ownership of the struggling newspaper. The Venetoulis Institute was founded by hotel magnate Stewart W. Earlier that day, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette announced it had secured a last-minute buyer, a successful nonprofit journalism operation, barely two weeks before its anticipated closure.
