Newcastle had initially explored a move for the Germany international earlier in the summer before cooling their interest. This followed reports on August 6 that Newcastle was preparing an £85 million club-record bid for Nmecha, intending him as a replacement for Bruno Guimaraes, who was nearing a £75 million transfer to Arsenal. Earlier, on August 5, approximately 1,100 spectators attended Borussia Dortmund's first public preseason training session at the Brackel facility, welcoming Karetsas and players returning from Japan.
