CLIPr, a privately owned US company founded in 2020, develops and provides a video analysis and management (VAM) platform. Employing approximately 20 people, the company's platform uses patented AI and machine learning to facilitate the identification, organization, search, interaction, and sharing of specific moments within video data. As of 2023, CLIPr's annual revenue was less than $10 million.
CLIPr addressed the challenges of managing body camera footage in law enforcement. Previously, fulfilling Freedom of Information Act requests for body camera footage could take weeks due to manual redaction processes, which required up to eight hours to redact ten minutes of video. Officers also spent significant time reviewing footage and creating reports; for example, an officer might spend 45 minutes creating a report after a two-hour call. The increasing use of AI in policing, including facial recognition and automated transcription, presents both opportunities for efficiency and challenges related to legal, ethical, and procedural considerations. The company highlights that while body cameras improve accountability and transparency, significant time is still spent on review, redaction, logging, and report writing.
