The Exploratorium, a privately owned science museum founded in 1969, is located in San Francisco's waterfront area. Employing approximately 500 people, the museum's primary offering is interactive science exhibits. Notable for its early adoption of internet technology, the Exploratorium launched a website in 1994, among the earliest on the World Wide Web, and has since developed a substantial online collection of digital media.
The Exploratorium started the Pi Day tradition in San Francisco, celebrating its 22nd year in 2010. The museum, an interactive science, art, and human perception museum, opened in 1969 at the Palace of Fine Arts and remained there until January 2013. Staff participated in the planning and furniture selection for a project. In 2025, the Exploratorium will be a host institution for the ASTC Annual Conference in the San Francisco Bay Area. A new exhibition, Adventures in AI, opened, allowing visitors to explore and interact with artificial intelligence. This summer, the Exploratorium offered an all-ages exhibition on artificial intelligence at Pier 15, featuring activities such as voice-activated painting and interaction with AI-powered artwork.
