On August 10, 2026, Free upgraded its connection on Nine's Internet Exchange Point (IXP) platform in the Paris region, increasing its port capacity from 100 Gbps to 400 Gbps at the Telehouse TH2 Leon Frot data centre. Previously, on June 18, the company left thousands of customers struggling to obtain internet contracts after prematurely shutting down its copper wire ADSL internet networks in various areas across France. Earlier in June, on June 13, the French antitrust chief questioned the self-evidence of a proposed €20.35 billion acquisition of SFR by a consortium including Free, Bouygues Telecom, and Orange, emphasizing the need for competition authority approval to close SFR and divide its assets. This development followed the June 6 signing of a memorandum of understanding by Free's parent company, Iliad Group, along with Bouygues Telecom and Orange, with Altice France to acquire key SFR assets, an initiative intended to significantly strengthen Free's market position.
