Free, also known as ISP, Free Telecom, or Groupe iliad, is a privately owned French telecommunications company headquartered in France and operates as a subsidiary of Groupe iliad. Founded in 1999, it employs approximately 9,450 individuals and reported $7.5B in revenue as of 2025. The company specializes in telecoms, with operations encompassing fixed and mobile telephony services, prepaid phone cards, Internet access provision, and hosting services. Its subsidiaries include Free Mobile and Trax.
Free left thousands of customers struggling to obtain internet contracts after shutting down copper wire networks early, notifying certain ADSL internet contract holders on June 18 that its network was being closed in their areas. Previously, on June 13, the French antitrust chief stated that the proposed €20.35 billion buyout of SFR by Free, Bouygues Telecom, and Orange was "not self-evident" and required approval from competition authorities. This followed the signing of a memorandum of understanding on June 8 by Free (Iliad Group), Bouygues Telecom, and Orange with Altice France to acquire key assets of SFR. The acquisition aims to significantly strengthen Free's position in the French telecom market, potentially adding over eight million subscribers and a portfolio of valuable mobile spectrum assets. Orange's share of the total enterprise value in the transaction amounts to approximately 27%, or €5.6 billion.
