German Football League, a privately owned entity based in Germany, was founded in 1979 and employs approximately 20 individuals. The organization specializes in contact sports, operating as the elite league for American football within Germany. Its playing rules are based on those of the American NCAA. The league adopted its current name, German Football League, in 1999, having previously been known as American-Football-Bundesliga.
Philipp Lahm recently expressed "curiosity" about the impact of the new German U21 league, which the German Football League (DFL) announced in March 2026, though he stressed that regular first-team football remains more important for young talent development. Earlier, on January 8, 2026, a Bundesliga game featuring FC Bayern Munich was slated for broadcast on free-to-air television without subscription, according to Bild. This followed the DFL's move on July 3, 2025, to acquire a 49% stake in sports streaming platform Dyn Media in conjunction with German retail company Schwarz Group. Under their agreement, Schwarz holds 42.5% of Dyn, while the DFL holds 6.5%. Axel Springer and Dyn Media founder Christian Seifert maintained their stakes of 42.5% and 9% respectively. Previously, on April 10, 2025, the DFL reportedly explored a potential €100 million ($111 million) strategic investment from Adidas, as it continued its search for an external financial backer for the Bundesliga.
