German Football League, also known as GFL, is a privately owned entity headquartered in Germany. The league specializes in contact sports, serving as the elite league for American football in Germany. Its playing rules are based on those of the American NCAA, and in 1999, the league changed its name from American-Football-Bundesliga to its current designation.
Philipp Lahm recently expressed "curiosity" regarding the impact of the new German U21 league, a voluntary competition for Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga clubs announced by the German Football League (DFL) last month, while stressing the continued importance of regular first-team football for young player development. Earlier, on January 8, 2026, a Bundesliga game involving FC Bayern Munich was slated for broadcast on free television. This followed the July 3, 2025 announcement that German retail company Schwarz Group and the DFL acquired a 49% stake in sports streaming platform Dyn Media. Under the agreement, Schwarz took a 42.5% stake and the DFL secured 6.5%, with Axel Springer and former DFL CEO Christian Seifert retaining their shares of 42.5% and 9% respectively. Previously, on April 10, 2025, reports indicated the DFL was exploring a €100 million ($111 million) strategic investment from Adidas for the Bundesliga, as it sought an external financial backer.
