Also on June 26, community college students from across the Northeast completed a two-day program at MIT.nano, gaining insights into cleanroom tools and building and packaging their own functional photonic chips, which Anu Agarwal, a principal research scientist in the Materials Research Laboratory, described as essential for semiconductor packaging. Previously, on June 25, a research team from MIT and Microsoft developed Murakkab, a system designed to automatically optimize multi-step AI workflows. This system aims to reduce energy use and cloud costs without impacting performance, addressing the growing challenge of overprovisioned resources in fragmented agentic cloud applications, and was presented at the USENIX Symposium on Operating Systems Design and Implementation.
