Massachusetts Institute of Technology, also known as MIT, is a privately owned entity headquartered in the US. Founded in 1861, it operates with approximately 18,340 employees. The institution is devoted to the advancement of knowledge and education of students in areas that contribute to or prosper in an environment of science and technology.
On August 21, 2026, developers unveiled an experimental wearable technology that allows AI commands to control hand movements, such as telling an AI to "move my finger." Earlier the same day, engineers successfully printed living bacterial transistors onto agar plates, configuring colonies of cells to act as switches that route chemical signals and perform calculations previously confined to silicon chips. Researchers also redesigned ordinary fog nets, modifying their mesh and coating to extract drinking water from atmospheric fog in some of Earth's driest regions, including Chile's Atacama Desert. Concurrently, other researchers overcame a major hurdle for microwave quantum technologies by developing a scalable platform that generates pairs of highly correlated radio frequency waves without the need for bulky and expensive cooling equipment, advancing secure communications and signal processing.
