PLDT is a Publicly Owned company headquartered in the Philippines, founded in 1928, with approximately 7,210 employees, and reported $3.9 billion in revenue as of 2025. The company operates as a telecommunications and digital services provider.
PLDT's wireless subsidiary Smart Communications Inc. (Smart) expects to improve the outbound data roaming experience for Filipino travelers after successfully completing a live demonstration of local breakout (LBO) technology with tech partner Nokia, according to a statement on July 8, 2026. The trial, conducted earlier this year during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, routed subscriber data traffic through the nearest point of presence in Europe instead of sending it back to the Philippines. Previously on July 9, Manuel V. Pangilinan, known as "MVP," was identified as Chairman of Metro Pacific Investments Corporation (MPIC). Under his leadership, MPIC expanded its reach across various sectors, including telecommunications, making strategic acquisitions and partnerships with major players such as PLDT Smart Communications and TV5. Earlier on July 8, PLDT Global Corporation, PLDT's international business unit, reported a 26% year-on-year increase in total first-quarter net service revenues for 2026, driven by hyperscaler demand and new deals from global enterprises, while also noting an easing in carrier voice decline to -8% year-on-year. Also on July 8, Smart engineers successfully reconnected Balut Island to the cellular grid following a disaster.
