Princeton University, a privately owned institution headquartered in the US, was founded in 1746 and employs approximately 10,890 individuals. Functioning as a private Ivy League research university, it was originally established in Elizabeth, New Jersey, as the College of New Jersey. Princeton is recognized as the fourth-oldest institution of higher education in the United States and was one of the nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution. The institution moved to Newark in 1747 and later to its Mercer County campus in Princeton nine years afterward, officially becoming Princeton University in 1896.
