Radio Vaticana, also known as Statio Radiophonica Vaticana, is a state-owned entity headquartered in Vatican City. Established in 1931 with an estimated 100 employees, it functions as the official international broadcasting station of the Holy See, operating under the historical callsign HVJ. The station was formally inaugurated on 12 February 1931 by Pope Pius XI and was planned, engineered, and built by wireless communications inventor Guglielmo Marconi. From its inception until 2017, the administration and spiritual direction of the station were traditionally entrusted to the Society of Jesus. Following a structural reorganization by Pope Francis under the apostolic letter Apostolicum Ministerium, Radio Vaticana now operates as a core media sector within the Dicastery for Communication (Dicastero per la Comunicazione), under the editorial direction of Massimiliano Menichetti. Operating as a multilingual voice of the Catholic Church, the broadcaster employs over 200 journalists representing dozens of nationalities to compile and transmit religious, cultural, and current affairs programming in nearly 50 distinct languages. Its intellectual property library encompasses extensive papal archives, historical encyclical recordings, wartime search messages for missing persons during World War II, and decades of ecumenical, documentary, and classical audio assets.

News Summary:

On June 14, 2026, Pope Leo XIV, in his message for the 10th World Day of the Poor, called on Christians to rediscover the central place of the poor and strengthen their commitment to justice, solidarity, and human dignity. He also expressed solidarity with Filipinos affected by a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Mindanao on June 8. This followed his Apostolic Journey to Spain, where, on June 12, Pope Leo addressed Church groups, charities, and civil organizations in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, calling for a renewed commitment to migrant integration. He insisted that welcome must extend beyond emergency assistance to restore dignity, belonging, and opportunity, reflecting on the Canary Islands' role as a principal migration route. The Pope concluded the first leg of this journey in Barcelona on June 9, meeting with volunteers who helped organize his visit and thanking them for their generosity and spirit of service. Earlier, on June 8, Vatican News editorial director Andrea Tornielli reflected on Pope Leo’s words to the Spanish faithful, noting they pointed to a path for the whole Church focused on popular piety and care for those on the margins.
