News Summary:

On July 9, 2026, Russian Athletics announced its appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against World Athletics' (WA) decision to maintain the ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes. Russian Athletics stated that WA's ban, imposed in March 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, restricts its athletes' right to compete on grounds the federation considers discriminatory; WA confirmed it would "strenuously defend [its] position." This appeal follows the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) provisional lifting of its suspension of Russia on July 8. The controversial decision, made amid Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine, opens a path for Russian athletes to gradually return to the international competition system, aiming for participation as full-fledged participants in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and beyond, though it is considered only a first step toward full rights restoration. Earlier, on July 7, the IOC announced program changes for the 2030 Winter Olympics, adding freeride skiing, snowboarding, and synchronized skating events while dropping Nordic combined. The Games, slated for the French Alps, are also set to achieve gender parity among athletes for the first time in a Winter Olympics, with 3,046 participants across 126 events.
