Rakuten, a publicly owned Japanese company founded in 1997, is a provider of diverse online services. Employing approximately 9920 people, the company's core business is software development, supporting a range of offerings including e-commerce, digital reading platforms, travel services, financial products (banking, securities, credit cards, and electronic money), online media and marketing, and professional sports ventures. In 2024, Rakuten reported revenues exceeding $1 billion.
Rakuten Symphony announced a collaboration with Grameenphone, a Bangladeshi mobile operator, on a pilot project to build an Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) with 4G and 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) sites in Bangladesh. This was followed by another announcement of a deployment of Rakuten Symphony's networking and management software for a 4G and 5G NSA Open RAN pilot by Grameenphone. Separately, on September 19, 2025, Rakuten Mobile announced the deployment of Nokia’s remote power-saving solution for Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) optical transmission equipment in its 4G and 5G commercial network. Walmart sold a majority stake in Seiyu, a Japanese supermarket chain, to KKR and Rakuten for over US$1 billion.
