Niemi is the Acting Principal Percussionist of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra, a position she has held since 1992. On August 25th, KQED reported that in early March 2025, SFCM and the San Francisco Symphony paused the Emerging Black Composers Project due to a Department of Education memo advising against diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
