Showcase Cinemas, also known as National Amusements, is a privately owned company headquartered in the US. Founded in 1936, the company operates with an estimated 23,900 employees and primarily focuses on content rights. It functions as a movie theatre operator and mass media holding company, operating more than 1500 movie screens across the United States, Great Britain, and Latin America. Additionally, Showcase Cinemas is the controlling shareholder of Paramount Global.
On April 7, reports indicated that the sale of Showcase Cinemas' 16 UK venues, a circuit that has been for sale since last summer, was a step closer. Earlier the same day, speculation mounted that cinema chain The Light was nearing a deal to acquire the circuit, with The Times reporting talks were "at a relatively advanced stage." A spokesperson for The Light, however, described some rumors as "a little premature" without dismissing the story. Previously, on April 2, National Amusements sold the shuttered Showcase Cinema de Lux Randolph property for $9 million to Boston-based real estate developer Core Investments, according to state land records; the fate of the former theater remains unknown. In January, Showcase Cinemas launched its Family Favourites scheme, offering tickets for £2.49 for a selection of family-friendly films to attract young film fans and their families.
