Founded in 1981, it operates with approximately 500 employees, specializing in IT services and IT consulting. The SoftBank Group functions as a holding company, SoftBank Group Corp. (TOKYO: 9984), for its global portfolio of companies that include telecommunications, Internet services, AI, smart robotics, IoT, and clean energy technology providers. Arm Limited, a semiconductor IP company, joined the SoftBank Group in September 2016.
On April 4, 2026, Microsoft announced its US$10 billion, four-year investment in Japan's artificial intelligence infrastructure, which includes partnerships with SoftBank Corp. and Sakura Internet to develop domestic large language models and related AI services. This record investment, first reported on April 3, 2026, will also see SoftBank collaborate on training one million AI professionals by 2030, alongside cybersecurity initiatives. Earlier on April 3, 2026, law firm Kahn Swick & Foti LLC commenced an investigation into the proposed sale of DigitalBridge Group Inc. to SoftBank Group Corp., examining the adequacy of the $16.00 cash per share offered to DigitalBridge shareholders. Separately, on April 3, 2026, SoftBank Group Corp. and Tohoku University's International Research Institute of Disaster Science initiated joint research to develop generative artificial intelligence technology for disaster prevention, aiming to pass on memories and lessons from the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
