SoftBank Group, also known as SoftBank Group Corp, is a publicly owned company headquartered in Japan. Founded in 1981, it operates with approximately 500 employees, specializing in IT services and IT consulting. The SoftBank Group functions as a holding company, SoftBank Group Corp. (TOKYO: 9984), for its global portfolio of companies that include telecommunications, Internet services, AI, smart robotics, IoT, and clean energy technology providers. Arm Limited, a semiconductor IP company, joined the SoftBank Group in September 2016.
SoftBank Group Corp. is expected to lead a proposed $33 billion gas-fired power plant project in Ohio, which, with a capacity of 9.2 gigawatts, would likely become one of the largest sources of carbon dioxide emissions from electricity generation in the United States, according to a U.S. Department of Commerce fact sheet. This development follows an announcement by President Donald Trump on February 17, 2026, where he credited tariffs for helping secure the investment for what he called the "world’s largest power plant using natural gas." Earlier, on February 20, SoftBank, Amazon, Microsoft, and Nvidia reportedly planned investments of up to $100 billion in OpenAI, prompting questions about the artificial intelligence research laboratory’s clear path to profitability.
