News Summary:

On March 9, 2026, Sri Lanka Cricket appointed South African mentor Gary Kirsten as the new head coach of the men's team, taking over from Sanath Jayasuriya. Kirsten, who previously coached India from 2008 to 2011, guiding them to the ODI World Cup, and South Africa from 2011 to 2013, helping the Proteas become the number one ranked team in all formats, assumes the role after Sri Lanka failed to make the semifinals of the recent T20 World Cup. Jayasuriya officially resigned following the tournament's conclusion and will now lead the High Performance Centre. Earlier, on March 1, Jayasuriya announced his decision to step down as head coach in the wake of the team's abysmal performance in the T20 World Cup, where co-hosts Sri Lanka lost all their games in the Super 8s stage. This followed captain Dasun Shanaka's apology on February 27 for the team's disappointing World Cup outing after being knocked out by New Zealand in the Super Eight stage, having lost to New Zealand by 61 runs and England by 51 runs.
