Earlier on September 10, the European Commission (EC) awarded contracts to Thales Alenia Space and Aerospacelab for the buildout of the IRIS² constellation, following EC president Ursula von der Leyen's outline of the bloc’s space sector priorities. Also on September 10, Eutelsat Communications mandated Thales Alenia Space and an Airbus Defence and Space subsidiary for the development contracts of the first spatial component of the European sovereign IRIS² constellation project. This followed an initial contract signed earlier that day, when Airbus and Thales Alenia Space officially began the development of IRIS² satellites on behalf of Eutelsat, covering the design and build of the first layer of satellites for Europe’s sovereign constellation.
