Thuraya Telecommunications Company in Abu Dhabi commissioned Thuraya 1, built by Boeing, which launched on October 21, 2000, aboard a Sea Launch Zenit-3SL rocket from a mobile ocean platform in the Pacific, laying foundations for the country's space program.
