Founded in Taiwan in 1966, the Tzu Chi Foundation is a privately owned, volunteer-based organization. Employing approximately 740 people, it operates internationally, offering a range of services including disaster relief, medical and charitable aid, educational programs, environmental initiatives, and broadcasts via television and radio. Its activities are rooted in Buddhist principles and focus on community and social support.
Tzu Chi’s Southern Regional Office hosts regular free grocery distributions in partnership with the Houston Food Bank, offering fresh produce, dry goods, and pantry staples to low-income households and those in need. The Mid-Atlantic region has provided non-meat food items, including fresh produce and non-perishable goods, to families in need since September 2010. The foundation also offers free vision screenings to the community, regardless of age or insurance status. A separate event focuses on Dharma studies in English, open to anyone interested in learning and discussing Buddhist concepts.
