UK Athletics, also known as UKA and British Athletics, is a privately owned entity headquartered in the UK. Founded in 1999, it employs approximately 390 individuals and functions as a tier 1 media tech buyer. The organization serves as the governing body for the sport of athletics in the United Kingdom, specifically responsible for overseeing the governance of athletics events, the development of athletes, and the management of athletics officials, primarily within the domain of spectator sports. Although the organization outwardly rebranded itself as British Athletics in 2013, it legally retains the name UK Athletics and continues to utilize it for internal governance.
On February 20, 2026, UK Athletics pleaded guilty to corporate manslaughter concerning the 2017 death of Paralympic athlete Abdullah Hayayei. Hayayei, a United Arab Emirates Paralympian, was fatally injured at Newham Leisure Centre in east London on July 11, 2017, when a metal throwing cage fell on him while he was training for the World Paralympic Athletics Championships. Earlier, on February 11, UK Athletics announced a new safeguarding partnership with Patronus. This collaboration aims to utilize Patronus's platform for recording safeguarding and compliance matters, enhancing the organization's ability to gain insight and data on trends to proactively prevent future issues within the athletic community. Previously, on February 1, UK Athletics appointed Richard Yates as its new Legal Counsel. Yates brings extensive experience in sports law, governance, regulation, and safeguarding, replacing Tom Solesbury, who is departing to become Chief Executive of British Rowing.
