Universal Studios Japan is a privately owned entertainment provider headquartered in Japan, operating as a subsidiary of Universal Studio Group. Founded in 1994, the company employs approximately 550 individuals. The company functions as a theme park located in Osaka, Japan, and opened on March 31, 2001. It is one of six Universal Studios theme parks worldwide and was the first to open outside the United States. The park is owned and operated by USJ LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of NBCUniversal.
