Vodafone Australia launched its third advertising campaign featuring American comedian Ali Wong on June 24, targeting rival telcos' roaming charges with a spot filmed in Rome's Trevi Fountain. This followed a significant network outage on June 18, when a single hub failure in the national mobile network cut off calls and data services for approximately 5.7 million customers for about 3.5 hours during the busiest part of the working day, also exposing an MVNO fallback gap. Earlier, on June 17, the company stated its mobile network was being "progresively restored" after the major outage, confirming the cause had been "isolated and resolved." Previously, on May 27, Vodafone Australia reported that its expanded regional mobile network increased customer switching activity and improved network usage metrics, citing a Deloitte Access Economics report. This report indicated Vodafone's regional coverage footprint grew from approximately 400,000 square kilometers to over one million square kilometers during the past year.
