Operating as an estimated tier 1 media tech buyer and a subsidiary of Tencent Holdings, it was founded in 2018 and employs approximately 60 individuals, specializing in media and TV services. The company functions as Tencent's international video streaming platform, launched to global markets outside of mainland China in 2018. It serves as the primary distribution channel for Tencent's library of Asian content, offering popular and original Chinese dramas, variety shows, movies, and anime. WeTV integrates content from other Asian countries including Thailand, South Korea, and Indonesia, and produces its own local WeTV Originals in those markets. The platform operates on a hybrid business model, providing a content library free with advertisements, alongside a premium WeTV VIP subscription that offers ad-free viewing, 1080P higher-definition quality, and early access to episodes.
