WPP, publicly owned and headquartered in the UK, was founded in 1971. With approximately 79,420 employees, the company reported $17.9B in revenue as of 2025. Functioning as a multinational communications, advertising, public relations, technology, and commerce holding company, WPP specializes in providing advertising, marketing, and media agency services.
A new filing on September 10, 2026, indicated that findings from a Sony investigation support whistleblower Richard Foster's claims against WPP, potentially undermining the company's motion to dismiss his $100 million wrongful termination lawsuit. Foster alleges he was fired for attempting to expose an internal rebate scheme. Earlier on September 10, production trade associations from Europe, the UK, and the USA, alongside 25 global groups, collectively issued an open letter in April advocating for a free market production model and warning advertisers about uncompetitive and untransparent practices by holding companies. Also on September 10, Publicis is set to take over a luxury group's regional business in all APAC markets, excluding Japan, from January 2027, ending WPP's nine-year hold. Concurrently, WPP completed 88% of its planned 3,400 job cuts and aims to reduce global headquarters costs by 30% by 2028. Previously, WPP Production staff were asked in recent weeks to actively persuade clients to send all production work internally and to provide all three bids from WPP to bypass traditional triple bidding with procurement teams. This follows Foster's submission last month of evidence from a Sony investigation, which concluded WPP pocketed $350 million in media rebates in China belonging to clients.
