Founded in 2000, it employs approximately 90 individuals and reported $57.5M in revenue as of 2023. Functioning as a tier 2 media tech buyer, the company specializes in consumer gaming. Originally established as Microsoft Games, it underwent name changes to Microsoft Game Studios in 2001, then Microsoft Studios until 2019. The company adopted its current name, Xbox Game Studios, following 2019 as it shifted focus to acquiring more video games rather than studios.
A leak on February 26, 2026, from the LinkedIn profile of Jason York, a former senior games producer who departed Microsoft in August last year, indicated that Xbox Game Studios is developing an unannounced "largest" AAA title. This followed PlatinumGames and Xbox Game Studios announcing on February 25 that *Ninja Gaiden 4* would receive "The Two Masters" DLC on March 4 for $14.99, with automatic access for Deluxe Edition purchasers. Earlier, on February 10, Alinea Analytics reported on Steam wishlist data for games scheduled to release in 2026, noting gains for Xbox Game Studios. The company also confirmed on February 5 that *Forza Horizon 6* will support cross-save functionality across all platforms, allowing players to transfer progress. In January, Inxile Entertainment's studio head Brian Fargo described *Clockwork Revolution*, an upcoming role-playing game under the Xbox banner, as "well over ten times more ambitious" than previous titles from the studio.
