Abema, a privately owned company headquartered in Japan, was founded in 2015, employs approximately 90 individuals, and reported $38.0M in revenue as of 2023. The company operates as a tier 1 media tech buyer. Specializing in media and TV services, Abema functions as a Japanese over-the-top (OTT) media service. Launched in 2016, it is operated as a joint venture primarily between the internet advertising company CyberAgent and the legacy broadcaster TV Asahi. The company utilizes a hybrid business model as an "online television network," providing approximately 25 free, ad-supported streaming (FAST) channels, which include 24/7 news, anime, sports, and original entertainment. This linear, "passive viewing" experience is designed to be ad-friendly. A premium subscription plan supplements the free service, allowing users to watch past programs on-demand, a feature not available to free users.
On January 27, 2026, Akamai Technologies and Yospace renewed their agreement with AbemaTV, operator of ABEMA, one of Japan’s online video streaming services. This renewed collaboration reinforces a joint commitment to delivering high-quality, personalized ad experiences at massive scale. Under the agreement, ABEMA continues to leverage Yospace’s server-side ad insertion (SSAI) technology, powered by Akamai’s globally distributed cloud computing platform, to provide smooth, broadcast-quality advertising across its live streams.
Abema currently holds 10 broadcasting rights for sports competitions including combat sports, wrestling, baseball, motorsports and soccer | association football.
