Abema, a privately owned company based in Japan, was founded in 2015 and operates as a tier 1 media tech buyer with approximately 90 employees, specializing in media and TV services. The company functions as a Japanese over-the-top (OTT) media service, launched in 2016 and operated as a joint venture primarily between the internet advertising company CyberAgent and the broadcaster TV Asahi. Abema's business model is a hybrid, providing approximately 25 free, ad-supported streaming (FAST) channels, which include 24/7 news, anime, sports, and original entertainment. This linear viewing experience is designed to be ad-friendly. The free service is supplemented by a premium subscription plan that allows users to watch past programs on-demand, a feature not available to free users.
On January 27, 2026, Akamai Technologies and Yospace renewed their agreement with AbemaTV, operator of ABEMA, one of Japan’s online video streaming services. This renewed collaboration reinforces a joint commitment to delivering high-quality, personalized ad experiences at massive scale. Under the agreement, ABEMA continues to leverage Yospace’s server-side ad insertion (SSAI) technology, powered by Akamai’s globally distributed cloud computing platform, to provide smooth, broadcast-quality advertising across its live streams.
Abema currently holds 10 broadcasting rights for sports competitions including soccer | association football, combat sports, wrestling, motorsports and baseball.
