Alibaba Digital Media & Entertainment Group, a privately owned entity headquartered in China, was founded in 2016 and is a subsidiary of Alibaba Group. The group operates as a tier 1 media tech buyer, employing approximately 1500 individuals, and reported $3.1B in revenue as of 2024. The company's main product focus is broadcast television and radio. The group manages all of Alibaba's consumer-facing media and entertainment products and services, which encompass its video streaming platform Youku Tudou, its streaming music platform Alibaba Music, streaming video services tailored for its e-commerce sites like Tmall TV, its Alibaba Pictures movie division, and its UC web browsers.
Alibaba's location-based services platform Amap introduced ABot-Recon on August 28, a streaming 3D reconstruction model capable of reconstructing scenes spanning over 10,000 frames from just 12 consecutive frames in real-time. Concurrently, Alibaba Cloud initiated operations for two data centers in Brazil, establishing South America's first regional data center to expand its global artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud market presence. Previously, on August 27, Alibaba Group reported a 9% year-over-year revenue growth for Q1 2027, driven by strong performance in its cloud business and quick commerce segments. The cloud business saw external revenue grow 45%, with AI-related product revenue accounting for 35% of external cloud revenue and maintaining triple-digit growth for the twelfth consecutive quarter. However, adjusted EBITA decreased 30% due to significant investments in technology infrastructure, and GAAP net income fell 75%, primarily from reduced gains on investment disposals. Management projects continued growth acceleration with a focus on full-stack AI capabilities, targeting RMB 100 billion in external cloud revenue by 2030 and RMB 30 billion in MaaS ARR by the end of the current fiscal year. This followed earlier reports indicating that some American startups are increasingly routing AI work to Chinese-built models, including Alibaba's Qwen for customer service, citing cost efficiencies.
