Earlier in May, on the 5th, a Hong Kong China Rugby Women's XV squad, which included eight debut players, lost 71-12 to defending champions Japan in their opening match of the Asia Rugby Emirates Women’s Rugby Championship in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The Women’s Championship itself kicked off on April 29 in Almaty. This followed Asia Rugby's formalization of a regional partnership with the Chinese Rugby Football Association (CRFA) on January 20, by signing a Memorandum of Understanding to host major competitions in China during 2026 and 2027.
