United Rugby Championship, also known as URC, is a privately owned entity headquartered in Ireland. Founded in 2001, the organization operates with approximately 30 employees and reported $11.4M in revenue as of 2023. As a tier 2 media tech buyer, the company oversees an annual rugby union competition featuring 16 professional teams from Ireland, Italy, Scotland, South Africa, and Wales. The current name, United Rugby Championship, was adopted in 2021 following the league's expansion to include four South African teams previously participating in the SANZAR Super Rugby competition. The competition was previously known as Guinness Pro.
Springboks great Schalk Burger on February 26, 2026, expressed strong disagreement with the Super Rugby Pacific chief's assertion that the competition is not hindered by South Africa's absence, noting that South African teams were removed from Super Rugby in 2020 and subsequently aligned their club game with the northern hemisphere. Previously, on December 27, 2025, United Rugby Championship CEO Martin Anayi lauded the state of the tournament and voiced intentions to push for a global rugby calendar, highlighting the league's growth in quality and attendance since its rebranding from Pro 14 in 2021 and the addition of South Africa’s "big four" from Super Rugby. Earlier, on November 24, 2025, the Vodacom United Rugby Championship prepared for a period where South African teams faced particular disadvantage due to the absence of Springboks involved in an out-of-international-window game against Wales. This followed the URC's introduction of an independent Television Match Official (TMO) process on September 24, 2025, backed by Hawk-Eye technology, designed to enhance the accuracy of key decisions and accelerate game play by providing TMOs with real-time access to all broadcast camera feeds.
