Raidio Teilefis Eireann, also known as RTÉ, RTE, or Radio Television Ireland, is a State Owned entity headquartered in Ireland. The organization, which functions as a tier 1 media tech buyer, reported $411.7M in revenue as of 2024. Founded in 1926, it employs approximately 2,490 individuals. The company specializes in broadcast television and radio, operating as an Irish public service broadcaster that both produces and broadcasts programmes across television, radio, and online platforms. Its radio service commenced on January 1, 1926, with regular television broadcasts beginning on December 31, 1961, establishing it as one of the world's oldest continuously operating public service broadcasters. Raidio Teilefis Eireann is primarily headquartered in Donnybrook, Dublin, maintaining additional offices throughout Ireland.
Raidio Teilefis Eireann's Director General indicated on July 10, 2026, that the broadcaster will likely require approximately €65 million annually in additional funding from 2028, following the expiration of its current three-year government deal. The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) learned that RTÉ's €405 million operating budget is funded by €185 million from the licence fee, €158 million from commercial revenue, and a €57 million top-up from the Exchequer. This followed RTÉ executives' appearance before the PAC on July 9, where new figures suggested the taxpayer might cover a €54.79 million shortfall this year, representing a 32% increase from the previous year, as licence-fee income continued its decline. During this appearance, RTÉ was expected to report a 5% decrease in TV licence payments so far this year and discuss "significant reforms" implemented and its financial situation. Earlier on July 9, Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers stated no additional funding for RTÉ was under consideration, though he acknowledged the necessity of TV licence fee reform. RTÉ executives were scheduled to appear before the PAC that day to advocate for further government funding once the current €725 million rescue package concludes next year, and to provide updates on "significant reforms" and steps taken ahead of the extension of the Comptroller and Auditor General's remit at the broadcaster.
